YSAA NEWSLETTER SEPTEMBER 2026
Dear member
Hope all is well, can’t believe it’s already September and the weather has been amazing probably too hot for some, we have put a gravel path through the copse at the lake so hopefully it will make access to the island swims a lot better come winter, the path was constructed using 35m of timber edging and four tonnes of gravel, a big thank you to all the guys that helped with the construction, we received some bad news regarding the Sherborne Castle country fair last week, the fair has been going for 30 years and we YSAA have been there fishing with the children since we revamped the club, due to cost and decreasing attendance the fair will no longer go ahead, very sad day for all involved and the community ☹️☹️☹️ we held an open day at NP and 9 members fished catching small silvers and two nice Bream so many thanks for supporting this event, we will be starting back at Revels with the Birchfield students on Wednesday 9th September.
LAKE NEWS
The lake is getting lower and lower due to WW taking water but the fishing has been really good with plenty of silvers, Carp, Tench and a few big Bream being caught, quite a few of the Roach are over a pound, pleasure bag have been in the 15-20lb bracket and some nice Tench to 6lb, one of our members had 20 Carp to Around 8lb and a couple of Bream to just under 10lb, the blue/ green algae has been a problem if you are fishing close in on the whip but this will hopefully disappear due to the onset of cooler weather
BRIANS TOP TIPS
There are some nice Chub being caught at Ilchester so try meat on the tip, you might also pick up one of the rivers Barbel, if silver fishing at SB use corn/ pellet and ground bait and plenty of it, I done 20lb in a few hours fishing up in the water, anywhere near the bottom and you will be pestered with Carp but it’s good fun on an elasticated whip.
MATCH NEWS
Our matches are going really well and to win a points match at the lake you will probably have to do 20lb at the moment, we had a committee match at SB on 22nd August and Paul G won it with 30lb of silvers on the whip, lots of nice Rudd and Roach were caught along with quite a few Carp, we have a points match there at the end of September so really looking forward to it, Rich Fripp is now leading the points matches as he has overtook Joe but who will be top next week as there is still a long way to go.
RIVER NEWS
Lots of weed and bank vegetation on our rivers but there are plenty of silvers to be caught at Long Load, Wick, Ilchester and Mudford, one of our members has had some nice Perch at Ilchester and another a Chub of 4lb, we need some rain to put some flow back in our rivers and that will improve the catches, our efforts to get the river at Wyndham hill cleared up have got no further as we have still not had any response from the owners.
JUNIORS
We will be holding a free tackle give away morning at the lake for our junior members as we have lots of tackle donated by members, I will send an email out with a date and time to all members.
MEMBERSHIP
Can all members please make sure all your details on your CM profile are correct, a few are still incomplete and if we need to send out replacement gate cards or windscreen stickers it is very difficult to do so if not correct, many thanks
Off to SB now so enjoy your fishing
Kind regards
Gary
