YSAA NEWSLETTER NOVEMBER 2024
Dear member
Hope all is well and the fishing is good, we have had a busy month on the committee improving the club for our river and lake members
NEWS
In September I mentioned that we were looking at two river stretches to rent and working hard on trying to improve our river fishing and with this in mind I can pass on some good news, our membership secretary Paul has been in negotiations with Newton park estate and we have acquired the river Yeo for us to hold matches only, it is not available for general fishing, many of our older members will know we used to have matches there about 30 years ago so a bit of the club’s history has come back, myself and Paul fished there a few weeks ago and had a good few hours catching Roach, Rudd, Perch, lots of small chub and a bream of 3-4lb, it is our plan to put in 20 plus permanent peg from the old railway bridge to just below the house.
We have also acquired the fishing rights to the Yeo in Ilchester on the old cheese factory stretch which runs from Free Street in the village to Hainbury Weir on the right hand bank looking up stream, back in the late 70s early 80s this was SEB water and their match venue. As theses stretches of water have not been fished for many years we need to carry out some maintenance so please be patient
LAKE NEWS
We started our autumn feed program or should I say Geoff has, he is feeding twice a week with the same pellets we use in the spring, he has been feeding for the last 3 weeks putting in around 40kg+ per week. The fishing has been good with many nice bags of roach on all methods with maggot, corn, worm and even wafters for the bigger specimens, many of our members are reporting more and more carp and tench being caught in the last month which is fantastic and the blog is on the website regarding this, we are also seeing greater numbers of skimmers being caught, something we haven’t seen for years, the last few weeks has seen the lake colour up nicely due to all the rain and we have had and some large bream caught which is again fantastic, what is not so good is the pike fishing has been poor due to the water colour.
MEMBERS SAFETY
The club takes the safety of its members very seriously and would like to inform you of a few recommendations
1 If you are a non-swimmer we would recommend you don’t fish alone (TAKE OR FISH WITH A FRIEND) if this is not possible wear a life preserve, there are many good compact ones on the market.
2 If you are fishing in the middle of nowhere we would recommend you use the WHAT 3 WORDS application on your phone in case there is an emergency, if you are able to use your phone it will show your location anywhere in the world and emergency services will be able to pin point exactly where you are should you need assistance.
MATCH NEWS
We are nearing the end of our points matches for this year and the turnout has been fantastic considering the awful weather this year so many thanks to all, Dave Greenham is on course to be crowned points champion 2024 but it’s not over to the final whistle on the 10th November.
PIKE SEASON
Our lake pike season started on the 1st October and due to all the rain we have had the lake has coloured up so not good for pike fishing, I have not received any reports regarding catches, this also applies to our rivers as they are up and coloured and were in the fields a few weeks ago.
OUR LAKE TENCH
The £6,000.00 of tench we ordered will be stocked into the lake in the next few weeks and some more good news, some of the bigger fish we ordered will now be between 1-4lb, many of you know tench are very slow grower’s and that is why the cost is about £15 per pound a 4lb fish will be in the region of 10 years old and be worth about £60. I will let you know when we get a date and time from our supplier
RIVER NEWS
Unfortunately I have had no reports from our members this is probably due to the fact they have been unfishable for long periods due to the weather, our river secretary has been out and about and they are not looking good, very high and pushing through.
BAILIFFS / VOLUNTEERS
The club would like to give a warm welcome to our new bailiffs Simon and Phil who will be out and about on our waters in the coming weeks; we are also looking for more volunteers to help with up and coming projects
ENVIRONMENT AGENCY/ ANGLING TRUST
The committee will be holding a meeting with both parties on 12th November to discuss our waters and what can be done to improve the fishing and access, swage pollution, maintenance e.t.c
Well that’s it for this month and hopefully I will have some more good news in December
